FEDERAL ISSUES

The OSMA is aggressively involved in advocacy efforts related to the most vital issues in medicine today

--------------------------------------------

If Congress fails to act by November 30, Medicare and
Tricare payments to physicians will be cut by 25 percent
at the end of the year!

Now is the time for physicians and patients to Act!
Attached is a Physicians’ Grassroots Advocacy Checklist which was distributed to the Oklahoma AMA delegation at the Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates which took place last week.  The checklist highlights steps physicians can take to support Federation advocacy efforts on the pending Medicare physician payment cuts. The checklist identifies November 17 as “White Coat Wednesday,” and physicians across the country are asked to call their U.S. Senators and urge them to act before the next scheduled cuts occur on December 1, 2010.

Contact phone numbers for Oklahoma Senators are:
Senator Tom Coburn:          (202) 224-5754
Senator Jim Inhofe:             (202) 224-4721

Physicians can also utilize the AMA’s grassroots hotline to make calls at (800) 833-6354.

The attached patient handout developed by the AMA can be distributed to your patients or displayed in your waiting room to help educate Medicare and TRICARE patients about the problem.  The flyer urges patients to contact their legislators asking them to protect their access to health care using AMA’s patients’ advocacy hotline, at (888) 434-6200.
Additional materials can be found on the AMA’s web site, by visiting www.ama-assn.org/go/Medicarepayment, and selecting the link for AMA Physician Payment Action Kit.

If you have questions regarding this call to action, contact OSMA Executive Director Ken King, or OSMA Associate Executive Director Kathy Musson, at (800) 522-9452 or by e-mail to King@okmed.org or Musson@okmed.org

The time for action is now!!  We urge you to be a part of that action.
